Room to Breath

Whew, now that winter break has finally begun, here are some updates about my life so far.

[School]  Senior year has been an adventure so far.  Despite what people has told me, this has been by far my most busiest year.  Applications were an nightmare-- OSU is quite possibly the most infuriating and exasperating college ever.  Not only did they lose my transcript for application but also for the Morrill scholarship as well; my counselor not only sent them a hard copy but faxed it to them as well.  Anyways, now that the process is over I'm just sitting back, twiddling my thumbs and waiting for the acceptance letters to flood at my feet.  Hah, not likely.  This year I finally quit Tour Group and joined pit orchestra thinking that I'd be with my friend but alas, it was not meant to be.  It started out with me and one other freshman boy playing the violin but after the third rehearsal, David beat me to quitting and so now I'm left to fend for myself with a music score that has all the keys possible-- plus some made up ones.  Fun stuff.  Also starting Spring quarter, Michael and I are going to be taking college classes together at CSCC.  I'm going to be taking International Business and Marketing 101.  YAY, exciting stuff.

[Family]  I'm extremely grateful for my relationship with my parents.  Though our relationship does have it's occasional bumps and high decibel arguments, we communicate really well and I am thankful that my parents respects my independent nature as well as places a lot of trust in me.  It's a little bittersweet to think that in about 6 months, I'm not going to be living at home anymore.  Marissa and Jack are doing well in school I'm happy to report, they're both fighting less as well and so things around here have been pretty easygoing.  I talked to my grandfather the other day and he was more excited than I was at the prospect of going to college, he's so cute.  It is highly possible that I will be going back to Taiwan this summer to see how they are doing and then if my parents are okay with it, I might swing by Europe with some friends for a tour before school starts.  Though that means that I have to polish up on my French if I want to go anywhere... ahhhhh.

[Friends]  With a couple of months left before we all leave for our separate ways, my school friends and I have been hanging out a lot and getting to know each other better.  Like for today, a bunch of friends and I skipped third period to go eat lunch at Chipotle.  It was an euphoric feeling, being able to leave school and not really give a care.  We sang along with Backstreet Boys, N'Sync, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera in the car-- fun stuff.  I've also been hanging out with some church friends as well... I can't wait for the gift exchange with the girls, it's going to be so much fun dressing up and eating dinner together.

Well, I've recently discovered a new TV show called Moonlight.  It is about this vampire PI, Mick St. John and his adventures.  It's pretty good so far, I think I found a new guilty pleasure to watch while House is on hold.

This looks like fun, and it's a good reason for procrastination =]

I've come to realize that...

1. my butt: is actually visible!  One that I can be proud of too.. though it's nothing like Tiffany's ghetto-booty
2. when I talk: I am sometimes too careful of my words and miss opportunities
3. if I love someone: they become a part of me
4. I need: to know my own worth
5. I've lost: too much of my innocence from beginning of high school
6. I hate it when: everything is gray
7. if I'm drunk: it will be because I chose to

8. marriage is: something that I really want, with the right man.
9. my faults: are what makes me me.
10. I'll always be: proving my independence against the world
11. I have a crush on: insignificant things
12. the last time I cried was: because I needed cleansing.
13. my cell phone is: always there for me though somewhat neglected unfortunately
14. when I wake up in the morning: there is no use wishing for more sleep

15. before I go to sleep at night: I love to snuggle in
16. right now I am thinking about: how procrastination is good at times
17. babies are: pure because when they are angry, they cry instead of hiding it.
18. when I get on Xanga
: there are still people out there who still share despite lack of an audience
19. today I: will lock myself in my room and attempt to finish work
20. tonight I will: probably be cross-eyed from typing so many essays
21. tomorrow I will: still be writing away
22. I really want to: have a reason to smile

Art of heels

So I wore high heels to school Friday.  Why you ask?  Well, it was one of those I-feel-like-a-girl day.  You know, those "just wanna dress up for no reason" days.   Anyways, walking through the heels all day taught me several things:

1) While walking to first period, I reaffirmed my inability to walk gracefully in heels thus (almost) tripping while going upstairs.  yippie!

2) With the addition of an inch to my height, I've observed that the top of freshmen boys' heads are quite disgusting.  Especially this one kid, who looked like he just fought through a snowstorm.  Um ew.

3) I'm very self-conscious about making "clunking noises" while walking on non-carpet grounds and so to avoid embarassment, I've learned that in order to minimize the clunking, I have to take longer strides-- though not longer nazi strides but graceful swan glides.

4) In order to achieve graceful swan glides, I have to swing my hips with each step.

5) My hip muscles hurt.

6) I didn't even know I had hip muscles.

7) I also ache in random places.  Honestly, wearing heels make you develop muscles you didn't even know you had.

All in all, it was a fun experience though I don't understand how girls can wear heels day after day.  Especially when it is like, 60 degrees outside.  That's crazy.

So today in math class, my teacher began the day by reading a series of Stella Awards.  The Stella Awards are named after 81 year-old Stella Liebeck who spilled hot coffee on herself and successfully sued McDonald's and it inspired the creation of Stella Awards for the most frivolous, ridiculous, successful lawsuits in the United States.  Take a look:

5th Place (tie)

Kathleen Robertson of Austin, Texas, was awarded $80,000. by a jury of her peers after breaking her ankle tripping over a toddler who was running inside a furniture store. The owners of the store were understandably surprised at the verdict, considering the misbehaving little toddler was Ms. Robertson's son.

5th Place (tie)

19-year-old Carl Truman of Los Angeles won $74,000 and medical expenses when his neighbor ran over his hand with a Honda Accord. Mr. Truman apparently didn't notice there was someone at the wheel of the car when he was trying to steal his neighbor's hubcaps.

5th Place (tie)

Terrence Dickson of Bristol, Pennsylvania, was leaving a house he had just finished robbing by way of the garage. He was not able to get the garage door to go up since the automatic door opener was malfunctioning. He couldn't re-enter the house because the door connecting the house and garage locked when he pulled it shut. The family was on vacation, and Mr. Dickson found himself locked in the garage for eight days. He subsisted on a case of Pepsi he found, and a large bag of dry dog food. He sued the homeowner's insurance claiming the situation caused him undue mental anguish. The jury agreed, to the tune of $500,000.

4th Place

Jerry Williams of Little Rock, Arkansas, was awarded $14,500. and medical expenses after being bitten on the buttocks by his next door neighbor's beagle. The beagle was on a chain in its owner's fenced yard. The award was less than sought because the jury felt the dog might have been just a little provoked at the time by Mr. Williams who had climbed over the fence into the yard and was shooting it repeatedly with a pellet gun.

3rd Place

A Philadelphia restaurant was ordered to pay Amber Carson of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, $113,500. after she slipped on a soft drink and broke her coccyx (tailbone). The beverage was on the floor because Ms. Carson had thrown it at her boyfriend 30 seconds earlier during an argument.

2nd Place

Kara Walton of Claymont, Delaware, successfully sued the owner of a night club in a neighboring city when she fell from the bathroom window to the floor and knocked out her two front teeth. This occurred while Ms.Walton was trying to sneak through the window in the ladies room to avoid paying the $3.50 cover charge . She was awarded $12,000 and dental expenses

1st Place

This year's runaway winner was Mrs. Merv Grazinski of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Mrs. Grazinski purchased a brand new 32-foot Winnebago motor home. On her first trip home, (from an OU football game), having driven onto the freeway, she set the cruise control at 70 mph and calmly left the driver's seat to go into the back & make herself a sandwich. Not surprisingly, the RV left the freeway, crashed and overturned. Mrs.Grazinski sued Winnebago for not advising her in the owner's manual that she couldn't actually do this. The jury awarded her $1,750,000. plus a new motor home. The company actually changed their manuals on the basis of this suit, just in case there were any other complete morons around.
